An Integrated Approach to Prevent Contamination

​The safety of essential products such as food, beverages, pharmaceuticals, and personal care products depends on the management and control of many factors throughout the entire supply chain – from the production and procurement of raw materials, the processing and packaging stages, to storage, distribution, and even consumer behavior after purchase.

​The application of the HACCP system (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point) effectively supports this approach. However, in necessary cases, equipment must also be designed and manufactured to prevent contamination risks, such as avoiding contact between the product and heating/cooling media during pasteurization or sterilization.

There are three main factors to prevent fouling in tubular heat exchangers:

  • System design
  • Manufacturing quality
  • System maintenance

System design

​There are two main methods to prevent cross-contamination between the product and the service fluid (heating or cooling) due to leaks in tubular heat exchangers:

1. Maintain positive pressure differential

​Maintain the pressure on the product side always higher than the service fluid. In the event of a leak, the product will flow towards the service fluid side, preventing any back contamination into the product.

2. Use double tube plate

​The two sieve faces of the tube are arranged separately:

  • One for the product
  • One for the service medium

​When a leak occurs from any side, the liquid will flow into the safety chamber or intermediate tank, ensuring that there is no mixing between the two streams.

​Based on physical barriers, this solution does not require auxiliary systems, simplifying the manufacturing, operation, and maintenance of the equipment.

​For this reason, HRS Heat Exchangers uses a double tube plate system in food production applications that require contamination prevention. This is standard equipment in the S Series multi-tube heat exchanger line, with different finishing versions for each purpose, including the SP Series specifically designed for pharmaceuticals and pure chemicals.

​The distance between the two sieve surfaces depends on:

  • Type of food product
  • Installation space

​Even when the distance is only 3 mm, effectiveness is still ensured.

This space can:

  • Covered (with drain holes or inspection ports)
  • Or leave it open, depending on the material and operating conditions.

Manufacturing heat exchange equipment

​Not only is the quality of materials (for example: stainless steel) important, but the quality of manufacturing and processing also plays a key role:

  • The weld must be precise
  • The joints (rolled or welded) must be smooth → prevent product fouling or product jamming
    → at the same time strong enough to work under pressure.

The importance of hygiene

​Cleaning, inspecting, and performing regular maintenance according to the manufacturer's recommendations is extremely important:

  • Ensure that the drainage holes function properly in case of a leak
  • Reduce the risk of leakage
  • Create opportunities for timely detection and correction

​In addition to the double tube plate design that prevents contamination, the HRS S Series also incorporates hygienic design features.:
